Poem for Sanah's School Magazine

The first few months in school
A saga of anticipation, adulation and leaving the friendly pool

Anticipatory months claimed attendance as a right
only to shudder at its first sight
Tightly gripped the hands that care
Hoping tentative steps, they would be there to share

Admission was all about toys
reminded of the park where played girls and boys
Uniform was nothing but clothes new
Fresh they would feel as the morning dew

Excitement carried through the first day
trepidation crept through next, with the morning rays
Expensive diamonds from the eyes were shed
Unanswered pleading ‘whys’ were constantly fed

Farewell on the gate was a tale of tears
the sobs and howls exposed all fears
Reassurance kept one going that mom was on the gate
Waiting to take one away from this perceived torturous state

The end of school though was another tale
stories of ma’am could never pale
Students donned the mantle of the teachers
While parents were relegated to listen to the young preachers

Homework was the next mile stone
A mill stone, whose early completion with parents was atone

Just as stars & grades from teachers made it all fun
dad taught naughtiness to ensure one was no nun
While naughtiness was thus taught
His presence during punishments was most sought

Fancy dress, recitation, singing and dancing kept us busy on other days
alphabets and numbers however were our ways
With pencil and rubber in our tiny hands
Striving to make a mark in our lands

For this is the beginning of a journey in our life
As we quest to grow our status to a giant size
